What Is Fluoride in Toothpaste?

Fluoride is one of the most commonly recognized active ingredients in toothpaste and is widely accepted for its effectiveness in helping prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps maintain strong tooth structure, increases the resistance of tooth enamel to acid attacks, and supports the remineralization of weakened enamel.

However, it is important to choose a toothpaste containing an appropriate concentration of fluoride to achieve effective cavity protection while ensuring safe everyday use.

How Does Fluoride Help Prevent Tooth Decay?

When fluoride toothpaste is used regularly, fluoride comes into contact with the tooth enamel and is also retained temporarily in saliva and oral tissues.

Immediately after brushing, fluoride levels in the mouth remain relatively high for approximately 30 minutes before gradually returning toward normal levels over the following 2–3 hours.

This regular exposure to fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, supports the remineralization process, and increases the enamel’s resistance to acids produced by oral bacteria.

How Much Fluoride Should Toothpaste Contain?

According to information from the Dental Association of Thailand, toothpastes containing fluoride concentrations of 1,000, 1,055, 1,100, and 1,250 parts per million (ppm) have been shown to reduce dental caries in mixed and permanent dentition by an average of approximately 23%.

Toothpaste containing 1,500 ppm fluoride may provide approximately 6% greater caries-preventive effectiveness compared with lower fluoride concentrations.

A concentration of 1,500 ppm means that the toothpaste contains 1,500 parts of fluoride per one million parts of toothpaste.

In Thailand, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) has permitted toothpaste containing fluoride concentrations of up to 1,500 ppm since 2019.

In general, toothpaste containing approximately 1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride is considered an appropriate concentration for helping prevent tooth decay when used correctly. Teeth should be brushed with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, particularly in the morning and before bedtime.
